Promoting awareness & usage of steel slag

New Delhi, Apr 22 (KNN): To promote the awareness and usage of steel slag in end user segments like construction and railways, FICCI and the Ministry of Steel are organising a seminar here on April-25.
“Our endeavour, through this conglomeration of Government, policy makers, industrial leaders, steel manufacturers and end user segments from India is to promote the slag as an alternative construction material highlighting its superior environment friendly qualities and better product features,” an official release said.
The seminar would serve as a platform for the steel manufacturers to promote the slag among the users, while the potential customers would be able to discuss and resolve their myths around slag usage.
Various government agencies such as Bureau of Indian Standards and Indian Roads Congress are also a part of the event.
The key objectives of this seminar are to promote the steel slag as an alternative construction material with focus on its product qualities and environment friendly usage; to disseminate knowledge on steel slag and its chemical properties; and to act as a platform for networking and business alliances among the end users and steel manufacturers
Steel Slag is a by-product of the steel making process. Depending on the stage or type of steel making process, the slag generated is called High Sulphur Slag, LD Slag, LF Slag or Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Slag.
Steel slag and in particular LD and EAF Slag are being used extensively for various applications in many countries across the world including in USA, Australia, China, etc. Some of the established applications of Steel slag outside India include its usage as an aggregate for road construction, as rail ballast, for land and mine fill, for cement and for agriculture. In fact, Steel slag has been found to be environmentally superior to the traditional material in many ways.
Considering the inherent advantages of steel slag over natural material both from usage and environment perspective, FICCI has taken the initiative of promoting the awareness and usage of steel slag in the country.
Also, before any application can be accepted and established, it requires statutory approvals from various Government agencies like Indian Roads Congress for road construction, Bureau of Indian Standards and Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) for rail ballast.
Therefore, the proposed event is serving the dual objectives of reaching out to the Government agencies for necessary amendments in the regulations and of making the end user segments aware about the steel slag usage and benefits.
Benefits of participation are knowledge dissemination on Steel Slag, its applicability and usage; discussion and resolution of the myths holding back the steel slag adoption in India; comparative overview of Indian and global steel slag adoption; deliberation on policy environment for fostering slag adoption; transfer of technology, investment, joint ventures, research and development
The seminar is a half-day conference with an inauguration and a technical session. While the inauguration focuses upon the overall benefits of slag adoption, the technical session highlights the chemical properties, environment friendly and cost benefits of slag. It would also highlight a case study adoption of steel slag in India. The technical session would be followed by a panel discussion highlighting on user myths and queries and how the same can be resolved.
The inaugural session would be presided over by the representatives from FICCI, Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Environment and Forests and Consultants from Australia. The technical session would have presentations from Steel Producers in India while the Panel Discussion would involve agencies like Bureau of Indian Standards, Indian Railways, Indian Roads Congress and National Council for Cement and Building Materials.
Audience profile for the event includes steel producers of India; central and state government agencies; Agricultural Universities; Agriculture & Fertilizer Organizations; Indian Railways
Among the speakers are Secretary, Ministry of Steel G Mohan Kumar, Secretary General, Indian Roads Congress, Vishnu Shankar Prasad, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Susheel Kumar, Director (Technical), Steel Authority of India, S S Mohanty, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Rajesh Bhushan and other industry experts.
