Pulses production shows record growth

New Delhi, Arp 30 (KNN)  Owing to the implementation of various government programmes, there has been a tremendous increase of 2.89 million tonnes in the production of pulses over the last five years.
 
“The implementation of NFSM-Pulses (National Food Security Mission), A3P (Accelerated Pulses Production Programme) and ‘Integrated Development of 60,000 Pulses and Oilseeds Villages in Rainfed Areas’ resulted in increase in the production of pulses from 14.20 million tonnes from 2006-07 to 17.09 million tonnes during 2011-12 with an increase of 2.89 million tonnes against the envisaged target of 2.0 million tonne,” said Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Tariq Anwar in the Lok Sabha today.

In 2010-11, the government had implemented ‘Integrated Development of 60,000 Pulses and Oilseeds Villages in Rainfed Areas’ programme with an allocation of Rs 300 crore.   Implemented in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the focus of the programme was on integrated intervention of water harvesting, watershed management and soil health for enhancing the productivity of pulses and oilseeds in the dry land farming areas.
 
Subsequently, renamed ‘Integrated Development of 60,000 Pulses Villages in Rainfed Areas’ in 2011-12 the programme was implemented with an outlay of Rs. 300.00 crores in 11 states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, that constitute nearly 96 per cent of pulse area in the country.

Further, in order to enhance production and productivity of pulses, several interventions were made to include in-situ moisture conservation techniques.  This included (a) new farm ponds with polythene lining or dug wells (b) plastic lining of developed farm ponds, accelerated pulses production program with inclusion of mini-kits and pest surveillance and market linked extension support through Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium (SFAC).
 
From 2012-13, the programme was incorporated under NFSM-Pulses.  Under the programme, during 2010-11 as many as 3016 custom hiring units of farm implements were established for the hire of tractor, rotavator and ridge furrow planter.
 
Also, during 2011-12, 10614 new farm ponds were constructed with lining, 1263 old farm ponds were provided lining,  and block demonstrations of pulses was carried out in 345 units (1000 ha per unit) by the states.
 
The Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) supported the government initiatives by forming 7551 Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs) and 127 Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) to develop a market chain of pulses.   (KNN)
