RBI Unveils UPI Tap & Pay, MyUPI With Safety Switch and AI-Powered Customer Support Features
New Delhi, Sep 11 (KNN) Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday unveiled two new UPI features — UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI, an AI-powered customer support platform — at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.
The features aim to make digital payments faster, improve payment safety and provide users with greater control over transactions.
UPI Tap & Pay
UPI Tap & Pay will allow users to make payments at NFC-enabled point-of-sale (POS) terminals by unlocking their NFC-enabled smartphone and tapping it on the terminal.
The feature does not require mobile internet connectivity on the user's phone, as the transaction can use the POS terminal's internet connection. It will support multiple UPI-linked account types, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI.
Users can make payments of up to Rs 5,000 without entering a UPI PIN. Transactions above Rs 5,000 will require the PIN to be entered on the POS terminal.
The feature builds on NPCI's UPI Biometric Authentication initiative launched at GFF 2025. Biometric-authenticated UPI transactions crossed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026.
MyUPI to Add Payment Controls
MyUPI, also referred to as UPI Help 2.0, is built on NPCI's Small Language Model, FiMI. It will provide users with a single view of their UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI applications.
The platform will include a Safety Switch to allow users to request the decline of UPI debit transactions if they suspect their account has been compromised. Its UPI Number Delink feature will allow users to delink their mobile number for receiving UPI payments.
MyUPI will also provide payee context-based information, giving users additional details about a beneficiary before they authorise a payment.
For eligible transactions, automated chargeback processing will enable real-time creation of chargebacks, aimed at reducing complaint resolution time. A Transaction Replay feature will allow users to recall and repeat past transactions through any UPI application.
The platform will also offer 24x7 multilingual support and self-service options, with NPCI describing it as a move towards a more proactive trust and control layer for the UPI ecosystem.
