Mumbai, Jul 11 (KNN)  Ph.D researchers will now have an opportunity to tell their research story in the form of a five minute video, in an entertaining way to a non-expert audience through the EURAXESS Science Slam India 2014.

“This competition, which is open to Ph.D students and Ph.D holders, invites participants to present their research work in the form of a maximum five minute video in English shot on mobile phones or other basic video technologies for a non-expert audience in an entertaining way,” an official release said.

Researchers of all nationalities currently based in India, and from all fields of research, including Social Sciences and Humanities, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering, can participate, it said.

The science slam in India is part of the 2nd global EURAXESS Science Slam.

EURAXESS Links India – an initiative of the European Union – has launched EURAXESS Science Slam India 2014 in partnership with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

In India, a maximum of 50 applications may be submitted and accepted between 21 June and 21 September 2014 on a first come first served basis.

At the final 'live' slam to be held in Mumbai on 1 November 2014, upto 5 shortlisted participants by the review panel will present their research to an audience of non-experts in English, in less than 10 minutes using if they wish video, power point, other media tools, as well as scientific equipment.

Their performances will be judged by the audience and the review panel based on accessibility, concept, presentation style and originality. This is also the criteria for the shortlisting phase.

The winner will be awarded a round trip to Europe to attend a science communication training programme together with the EURAXESS Science Slam winners from the ASEAN, Brazil, China, Japan and North America.

He/she will also be able to visit a research institute of his or her choice. EURAXESS Links will assist in arranging a meeting at one research institution of the winner's choice within the European Research Area. In case of a successful meeting arrangement, EURAXESS Links will finance the trip to this institute.

The first ever EURAXESS Science Slam India in 2013 was won by Shraddha Karve of the IISER Pune who presented research on e.coli using references to Wolverine and Calvin and Hobbes.  Her research using e.coli suggests that multi-drug resistance of pathogens is due not only to the misuse of antibiotics but also to rapid and random changes in environmental conditions.

"Slamming" she said "forced me to take a bird's eye view of my own work and provided me with an opportunity to present that point of view to the international audience. Memorable experience."

EURAXESS Links is a networking tool for European researchers working outside Europe and non-European researchers wishing to collaborate and/or pursue a research career in Europe. It has thus far been launched in North America (Canada and the USA), Japan, China, India, the ASEAN hub (encompassing Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam), and Brazil.

It provides information about research in Europe, job vacancies, European research policy, as well as opportunities for research funding, international collaboration and trans-national mobility.   (KNN/ES)
