Rs 5,990 cr to promote food processing industries

New Delhi, Feb 25 (KNN) The government has allocated an outlay of Rs 5,990 crore to promote food processing industries during the 12th Plan period.
“A sum of Rs. 5,990 crore has been allocated under various schemes of the Food Processing Industries ministry for promotion and development of the food processing sector. The sector has high potential for employment generation and optimal utilisation of perishable farm produce such as vegetables and fruits,” said a release from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
While a sum of Rs 2,800 crore is for infrastructure development activities, including setting up of mega food parks, integrated cold chains and abattoirs, the National Mission on Food Processing which has been launched in this plan itself will get Rs 1,850 crore.
As for the remaining Rs 1,340 crore, it will be spent on other activities such as strengthening of institutions, quality assurance and standardisation, technology upgradation and human resource development in the sector, it said.
In the current year (2013-14), Rs 708 crore has been allocated, out of which Rs. 247 crore will go towards infrastructure development.
Established in 1988, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) focuses on policy issues relating to the promotion of food processing industries in the country which would result in reduction in losses, efficient storage and transportation, processing, increase in shelf life of food products, availability of fresh and processed products at reasonable prices to consumers and better income to farmers.
