Rs 5,990 crore for promotion of food processing in the 12th plan

New Delhi Apr 26 (KNN) The government today said it has allocated Rs 5, 990 crore to implement various schemes for promotion and development of food processing sectors across the country during the 12th Plan.
“To implement various schemes for promotion and development of food processing sector, government has made a plan allocation of Rs 5, 990 crore during the current Five Year Plan,” said Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Charan Das Mahant in Rajya Sabha here.
The government had launched a centrally sponsored scheme, named National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) during 2012-13, the first year of the current Plan.
During 2010-11, the food processing industry had witnessed growth at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of around six per cent as compared to around four per cent in agriculture and nine per cent in the manufacturing sector.
Further, food processing industries in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) provide employment to about 14, 68, 426 people, as per the fourth All India Census of MSME.
According to the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) 2009-10, the total number of factories in the sector is 27,479. Among those, the highest number are in Andhra Pradesh which accounts for about 23 per cent of the industrial units in the sector followed by Tamil Nadu (15 per cent) and Punjab (8.3 per cent).
Meanwhile, the programmes covered under the NMFP during 2012-13 are scheme for technology upgradation and modernisation of food processing industries, value addition and preservation of infrastructure for non-horticultural products, scheme for human resource development (HRD) and promotional activities.
