Rs 960 cr rubber scheme extended

New Delhi, Feb 13 (KNN) Government has approved the continuation of Rs 960 crore scheme for development of the rubber sector by accelerating plantation in non-traditional areas, including the north east.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the continuation of the “Sustainable and Inclusive Development of Natural Rubber Sector” scheme with an outlay of Rs 960 crore in the 12th Plan with some modification as recommended by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), according to an official statement.

The main objective of the scheme is to enhance natural rubber production and productivity. 

“This would be done through expanding planted area, accelerating rubber plantation development programmes in non-traditional regions including the North-East, intensifying research to evolve appropriate technologies for rubber cultivation, processing and end product manufacturing and transferring technology through training and extension services,” the statement added.

In November 2013, export of natural rubber declined by 18 per cent to 468 tonnes due to fall in domestic production. 

Total exports of natural rubber during April-November, 2013 period was also down by 49 per cent at 4,633 tonnes, against 9,179 tonnes in the same period last year. Production of natural rubber fell by 7 per cent in the same period in 2013. (KNN/SD)
