SAIL Welcomes MMDR Amendment, Sees Stronger Domestic Iron Ore Availability

New Delhi, Aug 20 (KNN) Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has welcomed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, saying the reform will provide greater certainty in the mineral sector and support the development of its captive iron ore and coal mines.

The company said the amendment, notified on August 17, brings greater clarity and uniformity in mineral taxation and levies while addressing pending retrospective levies.

SAIL said the more predictable fiscal regime is expected to improve the viability of its mining operations, support investment and mine development, and strengthen long-term raw material security.

The company added that improved development of its captive mines could increase the availability of iron ore in the domestic market, subject to the applicable regulatory framework, supporting domestic steel supply chains and reducing import dependence.

The amendment is also expected to encourage higher mineral production and investment while strengthening India's mineral and energy security, SAIL said.
