New Delhi, Dec 16 (KNN) In a landmark judgement to cut down on alarming levels of pollution in the national capital, the Supreme Court has banned the registration of all diesel SUVs and luxury cars with engine capacity of 2000 cc or more till March 31, 2016.

Supreme Court also ruled out that all trucks that are not bound for Delhi will not be allowed to enter the capital region through National Highways 1 and 8.

While, the trucks carrying goods for Delhi will have to pay environment compensation charge (ECC) of Rs 2,600 for big trucks and Rs 1,400 for light commercial vehicles.

The apex court has also ordered the private cabs running in the city to convert into CNG by March 1, 2016.

Meanwhile, the top court has exempted the small diesel cars from the ambit of its order to convert into CNG.

Reacting to the Judgement, Delhi Goods Transport Organization (DGTO) President Rajender Kapoor told KNN that the move will hit the transport sector badly.

“The restrictions on the trucks and the ECC will lead to rise in inflation and increase the prices of goods immensely,” Kapoor said.

He also said that the with the increase in cost of transportation, the cost of transporting raw materials will also go up which will in turn push the final prices of the finished goods.
“This is make the products manufactured in Delhi less competitive as compared to the neighbouring states,” Kapoor pointed. (KNN Bureau)
