New Delhi, July 6 (KNN) The biotechnology sector, like several industries in India, is facing a problem of skilled labour shortage.

Though the field is actually multifaceted and includes areas such as bio fuels, drug discovery, medical equipment, bio-pharma, still there are lesser trained people available for the industry which has a tremendous growth potential.

Across different sectors of industry is facing problem of skilled labour shortage, which generally arise in the when employers face difficulties in finding staff with the appropriate skills, experience or qualifications to fill vacancies; when employers find that there are skill gaps as the existing employees lack the required skills; and when employers are unable to recruit the required staff due to other factors like low remuneration, unsatisfactory working hours, distant location, lack of sector-specific specialized skills.

The situations of skill shortages exist across many segments of the industry and economy of the country. The country has moved from a position where not only the technical qualified professionals in various streams are in short supply but there also exists an acute shortage of skilled workers.

“Today there is great disconnecting between industries and academia and there is lots of demand for skill people who can take care of their job roles from day one. But as far as the industries are concern they are not getting right kind of people on one side and on another side academia are focusing only on theoretical aspect. They are not able to understand what the actual requirement of the industries is,” said Cherion George, Incharge-Corporate Resource Management Centre from Jagan Insitute of Management.

In this context, Karnataka government plans to organise several short term biotech programmes like academic coaching, industry internship, PG-diploma which will be supported by the department of biotechnology at the Centre in order to help the students to gauge their skill levels.

The programmes will be organised in different places in the state like Bangalore, Tumkur, Mysore, Mangalore etc. (KNN)
