Small scale automotive workshop inside Tihar Jail; to help inmates' rehabilitation

New Delhi, Sept 8 (KNN) With a view to providing employment opportunities to the inmates on release, a small scale automotive workshop has been set up inside the Tihar Jail which would help them rehabilitate themselves.

"In this manufacturing unit, Wire Harness product, a key automotive component, will be manufactured by the Jail inmates," Delhi prisons DIG and PRO Mukesh Prasad old KNN adding that, “for this, skill development training has already been given to them.”

The manufacturing unit has been set up by Minda Furukawa Electric Pvt. Ltd (MFE), a joint venture company between Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group of India and Furukawa of Japan, who also gave skill development training to the inmates.

“The initiative has been started as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility by MFE. As the proposal came to us, we found it very helpful, both in the short as well as long run, so we agreed to start it,” Prasad said.

“The inmates will be paid wages and will simultaneously gain work experience which will put them in a better position to seek employment opportunities after completing their term here," Prasad said.

Around 30 – 35 inmates are currently working on the project and they will be supervised by professionals, Prasad added.

The venture was inaugurated in the presence of Delhi prisons DG, DIG, Chairperson of Spark Munda, Sarika Minda, President of MFE, A Maenishi and other senior officials.
Prasad said that there are many other new projects in the pipeline for jail inmates. (KNN/SD)
