New Delhi, Aug 8 (KNN) Southern states which are reeling under power cuts are expected to have overall energy shortage to the extent of 99.1 per cent during 2013-14, Parliament was informed today.

Sharing the information in the Lok Sabha, Power Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia said that overall the country was likely to face shortage of 6.7 per cent in power supply in the current year.

He listed various measures to overcome power shortages in the country which included monitoring of capacity addition of the ongoing generation projects.

Industries in the southern states including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the worst sufferers of power shortages in this year.

Ironically, the power shortages are adding to problems relating to industrial degrowth resulting from demand slowdown.

Nonetheless, states like Gujarat have become self-sufficient in power supply, where industries are getting electricity without interruption.

Meanwhile Scindia said, the Government has taken measures to overcome the shortage of power in the country such as acceleration in generating capacity addition during 12th Plan with a proposed target of 88,537 MW, renovation, modernization and life extension of old and inefficient generation units.

Further, development of ultra-mega power projects of 4000 MW each may reap benefits of economies of scale.  Augmentation of domestic manufacturing capacity of power equipment through joint ventures can be helpful.

In order to meet the shortfall in coal supplies to thermal power stations from indigenous sources, the power utilities have been advised to import coal, he said.

Strengthening of inter-state and inter-regional transmission capacity for optimum utilization of available power can overcome the shortage. (KNN/GUNJ)
