Special package for Pashmina wool production in 12th Plan

New Delhi, Sept 19 (KNN) In order to increase Pashmina wool production in Jammu and Kashmir, a special package with a total financial provision of Rs 41.21 crore has been introduced in the 12th Plan by the Ministry of Textiles.
“The scheme for Pashmina wool development is designed to make a meaningful intervention given the potential of this area to produce wool of fine quality. During the 12th plan a special package with total financial provision of Rs 41.21 crore has accordingly been introduced,” said a notification from the Ministry of Textiles.
The purpose is to increase the growth rate of Pashmina population from the present two to five per cent per annum. The scheme aims to reach a population of three lakh goats by the end of 12th Plan.
It intends to increase the growth rate of Pashmina fibre from two to ten per cent annually with total Pashmina fibre production of 65.0 tonne at the end of the plan.
The scheme will be operative in the Leh and Kargil area of Ladakh region in the state and will benefit the existing Pashmina wool growers and unemployed youth from the area.
There are 2.45 lakh goats, out of which 2 lakhs are changra and malra goats which produce Pashmina in the area. Many local type of non-Pashmina goats of nearly 45,000 come from the same larger genetic pool and contribute little to the total production of the region.
The objective of the scheme is to provide necessary inputs for breed improvement, training, health care and nutritional supplement for qualitative and quantitative wool production.
It aims to increase the population of Pashmina goat by distribution of male and female goats as foundation stock in non-traditional areas. A special package includes establishment of pasture farms for grazing of goats during winter season especially on migratory routes.
Further, it includes undertaking research for development of Pashmina wool, increase the income of the goat breeders and sustain their interest in this activity as a reliable means of livelihood.
India produces the finest Pashmina wool in the world, coming from the Changthang plateau of Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir.
