CoRE-AI Unites Google, Microsoft And AWS For Ethical AI Development in India

New Delhi, Jul 22 (KNN) The Coalition for Responsible Evolution of AI (CoRE-AI), India's first major multi-stakeholder initiative focused on the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence technology, was established this week.

Housed within The Dialogue think tank in New Delhi, CoRE-AI brings together over 30 key players in the tech industry, including major corporations, academic institutions, and AI startups.

The coalition boasts an impressive roster of participants, including tech giants Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, alongside Indian IT leader Infosys.

Prestigious academic institutions such as Ashoka University and IIM Bangalore have also joined forces with innovative AI startups like CoRover.ai, the creator of BharatGPT, and AI music startup Beatoven.ai.

At its core, CoRE-AI aims to foster public trust in AI through a multifaceted approach. This includes developing voluntary industry guidelines, contributing to robust regulatory frameworks, and addressing critical issues such as algorithmic bias, fairness, transparency in AI operations, and safeguarding user privacy and data protection.

The initiative has received a warm welcome from the government. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), expressed confidence that CoRE-AI will contribute significantly to India's larger national goals in AI development and help establish the country's leadership role on the global stage.

CoRE-AI has outlined its strategy to tackle the complex challenges of AI governance. The coalition will adopt a "principles-based approach," utilizing risk assessments to provide flexibility in addressing the diverse challenges posed by AI.

This nuanced strategy aims to shift focus from merely imposing restrictions on AI technologies to fostering an environment where ethical considerations are integral to AI development and deployment.

To execute its responsible AI agenda, the coalition has established four key working groups. These include Human-centred AI, ensuring AI development prioritises human rights and societal values; AI and Innovation, focusing on fostering and showcasing AI innovation within India; AI Governance, developing frameworks for ethical AI governance; and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI, exploring AI applications in government welfare delivery and digital inclusion.

The establishment of CoRE-AI aligns with the Indian government's broader AI initiatives. In March, the cabinet approved the IndiaAI mission with a substantial budget of Rs 10,372 crore, underscoring the nation's commitment to advancing AI technologies.
