New Delhi, Jun 27 (KNN) The national rainfed area authority is in the process of hiring an external agency to conduct a study on dynamics of marketing and price realization across the meat supply chain of sheep and goat for ensuring a better price arrangement for small traders in states such as Rajasthan, West Bengal and Karnataka.

In this regard, bids have been invited from professional agencies including research and academic institutions, development organisations and NGOs for conducting the study.

The sector has witnessed a steady growth over the last several years, although the whole supply chain of meat sector from primary producer to consumers remains unorganised.

Significantly, meat export is much in demand and the potential for the sector is very high.  As a measure to focus on the growing industry the rainfed authority is planning to transform it from the present state to meet the emerging challenges.

The hired agency has to identify critical transaction points within the chain of primary producer, slaughter house, consumer chain of goat and sheep meat trading.  Most importantly it will also assess role and benefits enjoyed by women folk in the entire supply chain.

India’s meat sector has progressed rapidly in the last several years with meat production registering a health growth from 2.3 million tonnes at the end of tenth five year plan to 5.5 million tonnes at the end of eleventh five year plan in 2011-12.

The study will be conducted in a period of 12 months from date of award of the work. The study will be conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The sector is the bread and butter of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers especially in dry land and rainfed regions as it acts as collateral against crop failures.
The marginal meat grocers in the area often get low prices due to commission agents, intermediaries and middlemen.

Agencies interested in applying for the project should have a proven track record of conducting similar studies in the relevant field and applicants during the last three years should not have failed to perform on any agreement as evidenced by an arbitral or judicial authority.  (KNN)
