Supreme Court asks Centre to guarantee minimum mandatory cash for citizens

New Delhi, Dec 10 (KNN) The Supreme Court on Friday asked the government to consider the minimum guaranteed cash for every customer per month. The court asked this in a view to ease adversities of public and some relief for cooperative banks.

"There has to be a minimum non-discriminatory floor which banks across the country must give to customers," a bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur told the Attorney General.

The government has to get back to the apex court on this appeal by Wednesday. The court suggestion came after former finance minister P Chidamabaram told the court that banks were not even fulfilling the government limit of rupees 24,000.

“Some banks give 1000, others 5000 and some none on the ground that there is no cash” said Chidamabaram.

The CJI also asked the Modi government to consider easing a complete ban on the functioning of cooperative banks.
