Swadeshi Jagaran Manch seeks protection for e-commerce suppliers

New Delhi, Jul 22 (KNN) Suggesting a host of amendments to the proposed consumer protection e-commerce rules, the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) has asked the government to make provisions for the protection of the traders and service providers associated with the e-commerce giants.

Reportedly, in its suggestions to the government, the SJM, an affiliate of the RSS, said there is a general impression that the rules are applicable to all the parties involved in e-commerce, “which is not true”, as the Consumer Protection Act does not apply to the traders and service providers.

“It is, therefore, suggested that this aspect must be clarified by way of clarification by the Consumer Affairs ministry, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) must make suitable rules for the protection of traders and service providers who avail services through e-commerce for commercial purposes,” it said in its submission.

“Small traders (on Amazon, Flipkart-Walmart), drivers on Uber, Ola etc. and small restaurants involved in Zomato etc., hairdressers, carpenters, electricians etc. on Urban Clap etc. and many other workers are subject to severe hardships by these E-Commerce giants, having no protection, at all, against exploitation,” it added.

It further said that there are many traders and service providers, which are not getting any protection under the law, due to the “inadequate or non-existent” e-commerce laws.

SJM, while welcoming the proposed requirement to register e-commerce with the government, said that small e-commerce companies should be exempted from the provision.

''Instead, the government should prescribe a minimum threshold for compulsory registration and the definition of an MSME may be adopted to define small e-commerce companies,'' SJM said.
