Tex-Eco Initiative To Promote Textile Waste Recycling, Recycled Fibre Development: Govt

New Delhi, Aug 12 (KNN) The government has undertaken several initiatives to promote textile recycling, adoption of recycling technologies and sustainable manufacturing as part of efforts to move the sector towards a circular economy, Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita said in the Lok Sabha.

In the Union Budget 2026-27, the government announced the Tex-Eco Initiative to support a globally competitive and sustainable textiles and apparel sector. 

The initiative will promote innovative technologies for textile waste management, recycling and value addition, including the development of recycled fibres, new materials, sustainable packaging and other high-value products from discarded textiles.

The Ministry of Textiles has also conducted a study titled “Mapping of Textile Waste Value Chain in India” to assess textile waste generated from pre-consumer sources, including manufacturing, as well as post-consumer waste.

Government Pushes Textile Recycling And Circular Economy

The government has constituted an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Task Force to examine sustainable production, certification and exports. It is also supporting industry-focused initiatives such as Circular Samvaad and the Cluster Exchange Mechanism.

Other initiatives include a UNIDO-Global Environment Facility project to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the textile and fashion supply chain and the UNEP-supported In-Tex India Project, which aims to accelerate the transition towards circularity through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).

Sustainability Research Gets Policy Support

The government is also supporting environmentally sustainable research and development under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) and developing a sustainability framework for PM MITRA Parks.

An MoU between the Textiles Committee, Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) and Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is also facilitating the promotion of upcycled products through government procurement.

The ministry said these initiatives are aimed at encouraging technology adoption, research, innovation, sustainable manufacturing and circular economy practices across the textile value chain.
