Finance Minister Unveils Five-Year Cotton Productivity Mission in Union Budget 2025-26

New Delhi, Feb 1 (KNN) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a comprehensive five-year cotton productivity mission in a significant move to bolster India's agricultural sector, during the presentation of the Union Budget 2025-26. 

The initiative aims to transform cotton cultivation practices across the nation, benefiting hundreds of thousands of farmers engaged in cotton farming.

The mission's primary objectives include implementing substantial improvements in cotton farming productivity while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. 

A notable aspect of the program is its focus on encouraging the cultivation of extra-long staple cotton varieties, which typically command premium prices in both domestic and international markets.

Under this strategic initiative, the government will provide farmers with advanced scientific and technological support to enhance their cultivation methods. 

This support structure aligns with the administration's integrated '5F' vision, which encompasses various aspects of agricultural development from farm to fiber to factory to fashion to foreign exports.

The announcement comes at a crucial time for India's cotton sector, which has been seeking technological intervention and modernization to compete effectively in the global market. 

The mission's implementation is expected to have far-reaching implications for the textile industry, which relies heavily on domestic cotton production for raw materials.
