Giriraj Singh Highlights Role of New Age Fibres in Sustainable Textile Growth

New Delhi, May 20 (KNN) Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated the national seminar on “New Age Fibres – Innovation, Research and the Road Ahead” in New Delhi on May 19, with discussions centred on the role of sustainable fibres in India’s textile sector and future policy development.

The seminar was organised by the Ministry of Textiles through the National Jute Board and attended by policymakers, industry representatives, researchers, startups and academic institutions.

Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles Neelam Shami Rao and senior officials also participated in the event.

Addressing the seminar, Giriraj Singh said new-age fibres could contribute to sustainability goals, employment generation and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

He also stated that regular virtual consultations would be held with stakeholders to monitor progress and support development of the sector.

The seminar focused on emerging fibres such as pineapple, flax, milkweed, bamboo, hemp, nettle, banana, ramie and kapok fibres, which are being explored for their biodegradable and eco-friendly properties.

Discussions highlighted their potential applications in sustainable textiles, agricultural diversification, rural livelihoods and value-added manufacturing.

The programme also featured the inauguration of the “New Age Fibres Expo”, showcasing products and technologies based on natural fibres. During the inaugural session, a “New Age Fibres” booklet and reports prepared by three task forces on fibre categories were released.

Joint Secretary (Fibre) Padmini Singla outlined global trends in sustainable materials and the growing demand for environmentally responsible textile solutions.

Four thematic sessions were conducted during the seminar covering policy frameworks, commercialisation, technological challenges and long-term sectoral planning.
