Jute Commissioner And Labour Minister Convene To Address Industry Challenges

Kolkata, Jul 10 (KNN) In a recent development, Jute Commissioner Moloy Chandan Chakrabortty has announced that efforts are underway to address key issues plaguing the jute industry, including order shortages and non-compliance with labour agreements by some mills.

A significant meeting was held on Monday between West Bengal Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak, representatives of the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), and other stakeholders.

The hour-long discussion centred on strategies to mitigate challenges faced by jute millers, according to industry sources.

One of the primary concerns highlighted during the meeting was the approximately 50 per cent reduction in jute bag orders, which has led to decreased operational days and working shifts in many mills.

In response to these issues, Commissioner Chakrabortty stated, "We are actively engaging with the Union food supplies ministry and state governments to increase jute bag orders for food packaging.

He added, “Our primary focus is on addressing the sectoral concerns to the best of our abilities."

This meeting and the subsequent statements from officials underscore the ongoing efforts to stabilise and support the jute industry, which plays a significant role in the region's economy.
