New Delhi, Aug 22 (KNN) Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated The Kunj, a flagship retail and cultural destination dedicated to Indian handicrafts and handlooms, at Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
Developed by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), this first-of-its-kind initiative aims to empower artisans, expand market opportunities, and present the craft sector through a modern, design-led approach.
The event was attended by Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, along with senior officials from the Ministry, including the Secretary (Textiles), Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), and Development Commissioner (Handlooms).
Speaking at the launch, Singh said The Kunj reflects the government’s vision to take artisans “from gaon to global.” He expressed confidence that this initiative would inspire similar projects nationwide and strengthen India’s position as a global hub of traditional knowledge and handmade excellence.
During a walkthrough of the complex, the Minister interacted with artisans, brand founders, and curators. He explored curated retail shops, live craft demonstration zones, artisan-led workshops, and exhibition areas spread across two floors.
He appreciated the diversity and craftsmanship on display, marking the beginning of a three-month inaugural celebration. The space also features culinary experiences and immersive cultural exhibitions, offering visitors a holistic view of India’s rich craft traditions.
Singh praised the efforts of the Development Commissioner’s office, design curators, planners, and marketing teams for turning the vision into reality.
He highlighted that The Kunj not only creates dignified retail opportunities for artisans but also redefines how the public engages with India’s craft heritage.
On the occasion, the Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed Shilp Bhawan, the office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts).
He congratulated all stakeholders for setting a new benchmark in presenting and promoting India’s artisanal legacy.
