New Delhi, Jul 3 (KNN)  In order to make it easier for the customers across the world to purchase Indian handloom products, the Ministry of Textiles will be starting an online portal for marketing of handloom products.

The e-commerce portal to market and sell the handloom products will be launched by the Association of Corporation and Apex Societies of Handloom (ACASH).

In this context, the association has invited bids for designing, development, hosting and maintaining e-commerce web portal on a daily basis, according to an official notification.

Developing the web portal will be a boon to the handloom sector as Indian handloom/handicraft products which have high demands in the global market will be easily accessible.

The e-marketing of handloom products will revive and upgrade the sector and also explore the tremendous potential of indigenous handloom products of India at global level.

Further, it will also generate employment in this sector and encourage the small handloom weavers who do not participate in the exhibitions abroad due to lack of finance and opportunities.

The government has also been providing financial assistance to exporters for participation in exhibitions abroad as well as incentives under Foreign Trade Policy i.e. Special Bonus Benefit Scheme, Support to Apparel Sector, Focus Product Scheme, reduction in transaction cost and procedural simplification for promoting export of handicrafts/handloom as well as handmade carpets and other floor coverings.

It has also been implementing various schemes viz Marketing and Export Promotion Scheme, Marketing Development Assistance Scheme, Market Access Initiative Scheme, Focus Product Scheme, Focus Market Scheme, Duty Drawback Scheme to enhance the capabilities of the handloom sector and to increase exports.

The Textile industry occupies a unique place in the economy; it accounts for 14 per cent of the total Industrial production, contributes to nearly 30 per cent of the total exports and is the second largest employment generator after agriculture.

It is one of the largest economic activities providing direct employment to over 65 lakhs persons engaged in weaving and allied activities. This sector contributes nearly 19 per cent of the total cloth produced in the country and also adds substantially to export earnings.

Handloom forms a part of the heritage of India and exemplifies the richness and diversity of the country and the artistry of the weavers. (KNN)
