Kovalam, Apr 26 (KNN) Industry and trade representatives from Tirupur textile industry along with several other southern state bodies aired their grievances to Commerce Minister Anand Sharma here today.

“Representatives from Tamil Nadu raised the issue of the problems faced by Tirupur textile industry in the wake of the Supreme Court judgement. Commerce Minister assured the Tamil Nadu state government full support from the Centre to meet the requirements of the textile workers,” said an official statement.

In its judgement, the Supreme Court had ordered the close down of all dyeing units in Tirupur, which could not maintain the industry norms for zero per cent discharge.
Representatives from state governments of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka participated in the meeting.

Sharma called on the southern states to take full advantage of 21 recently launched textile parks.

“The recent announcement of 21 new Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks has taken the total number of such parks to 61.  A large number of these parks are in the Southern states of India. They need to take full advantage of the Scheme,” he said.

The establishment of a National Institute of Design and a branch of Footwear Design and Development Institute in Andhra Pradesh are also on the cards according to him.

The government had given approval in principle for the setting up of three National Manufacturing and Investment Zones - one in Tumkur, Karnataka and the other two in Chittoor and Medak in Andhra Pradesh.

“In-principle approval has been given to three NMIZs. I urge the state governments to speed up the process of establishing these investment hubs,” said Sharma.

The southern states also put forth the problems faced by the plantation sector to which the Commerce Minister assured the state governments of full assistance to redress their problems.

Sharma will also review the situation of industries and textiles sector in Kerala; and present the Spice Export Awards for 2010-11 and 2011-12. (KNN)
