New Delhi, Mar 29 (KNN) In order to meet huge shortage of women directors in the companies boards, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has started special training programmes with a target of 3,000 in next three years for women aspiring to be directors.

“ASSOCHAM is holding many special training programmes for women aspiring to be directors to enable them to understand the role to play as directors on boards of companies and understand fully not only their responsibilities but liabilities too” said ASSOCHAM National Council for Corporate Affairs and Governance Chairperson Preeti Malhotra.

The apex industry body has also created a separate database of women directors eligible to be appointed on companies boards as independent directors.

“Women should utilize this interim time period to train themselves before they assume new responsibilities as directors on boards”, said Malhotra.

She said the training will bring in their own perspective to enable the boards to be more effective in decision making.

She further said the provision for women directors to be appointed on boards is very important for gender diversity and gives that initial encouragement to women to join Boards.

“Nomination committee should be responsible for ensuring that qualified persons from divergent backgrounds and gender who can contribute effectively are nominated for maintaining board diversity”, said Malhotra.

Companies Act, 2013 prescribes that every listed company and every other public company having a paid up share capital of Rs 100 Crore or more or turnover of Rs 300 Crore or more shall appoint at least one woman director.

The focus of the new Act is on stronger governance, transparency and accountability and the important aspect of governance and management is a strong and competent board of directors. (KNN/ST)
