Transport operators complain movement not eased under GST, might complicate further after eWay Bill

New Delhi, Aug 8 (KNN) With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) entering its second month and the reports of eased movement of goods along transport routes, the transport operators feel otherwise.

Talking to KNN, Naveen Kumar Gupta, Secretary General of All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) explained the situation.

Gupta informed that thought there are reports that under the new tax regime the elimination of multiple check posts have eased the congestion and facilitated the movement of goods. The congestion is eased, but not because of elimination of check posts.

“Ever since the GST was implemented, there is a sharp decline in the freight, the suppliers are confused, traders are also confused, the trade is happening at a very slow pace, because of which there is an ease in congestion” said Gupta.

Gupta further informed that there is anxiety in the sector, especially the small operators with regard to the eWay bill norm under GST.

He informed that over 75 per cent of transport operators in India own less than five trucks,  these small operators are going to be severely affected once the eWay bill provision is implemented as these operators are not tech savvy.

Gupta added that there was a lot of enthusiasm in the transport sector regarding GST, and the truckers expected that the inspector raj would cease to exists once the new tax is implemented.

“The inspector raj has taken a new form; the corruption has started to take a new form. Despite complete paperwork, the truckers are harassed and asked for money” he added.

Also his association has received complaints that there are GST flying squad and vans that trouble the truckers and demand for money, although the truckers have all the valid papers.

With the eWay bill getting the final nod in the GST council meeting held recently, the fear in the sector seems to deepen, added Gupta. (KNN/ DA)
