Lucknow, Jul 9 (KNN) The Uttar Pradesh Government has approved a new policy to promote heritage tourism in the state that will give special incentives to developing ‘havelis’ and other heritage buildings into attractive tourist destinations.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, an official spokesman said here.

The heritage tourism policy was approved with an objective of attracting domestic and foreign tourists to historical forts, palaces and havelis, he said.

After the implementation, the policy will enlist guidelines for maintenance of heritage buildings including forts, palaces and havelis in UP which may be used commercially as hotels and guest houses to promote tourism. The policy will also lay down guidelines for which places can be converted into heritage hotels, services such properties will offer, norms for their establishment, categorization, and special rebates as well as packages that may be offered to tourists.

It was felt that there were several historical buildings in the state which needed proper maintenance and could be converted into heritage hotels, the spokesman said.

Uttar Pradesh has the most popular tourist destinations in India with lots of historical monuments and religious fervour. Agra, Jhansi, Lucknow and Meerut are historical cities famous for their monuments. (KNN/SD)
