New Delhi, Dec 9 (KNN) The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has been implementing the scheme of integrated cold chain, value addition and preservation infrastructure in an effort to enhance food supply to its consumers.

The objective of the project is to provide incentives to create integrated cold chain and preservation infrastructure facilities in the country. Each project would cost around Rs 10 crore, said a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Processing Industries.

“Under the scheme, grant-in-aid is provided @50 per cent of the total cost of Plant and Machinery and Technical Civil Works in general areas and @75 per cent in difficult areas i.e. North-Eastern States, Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, subject to a maximum of Rs 10 crore per project,” it said.

National Horticulture Mission (NHM), National Horticulture Board (NHB) National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Agriculture and Cooperation Department and Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) are also providing assistance for setting up cold storages under their respective schemes, it said.

The government has extended project imports’ benefits to cold storage, cold room or industrial projects for preservation, storage or processing of agricultural, apiary, horticultural, dairy, poultry, aquatic and marine produce and meat.

Capital investment in the creation of modern storage capacity has been made eligible for viability gap funding scheme of the finance ministry.

The cold chains and post-harvest storage has been recognized as an infrastructure sub-sector, it said.  (KNN/ST)
