Varanasi Silk Exchange to be transformed into Integrated Silk Complex

Varanasi, July 20 (KNN) For the welfare of weavers in Varanasi the Silk Exchange will be developed as Integrated Silk Complex, informed MSME Chief Secretary, Navneet Sehgal.

It aims to boost the well-known silk industry of the city and also help other stakeholders.

The complex is being established under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme at the cost of Rs 8 crore, as per TOI.

It is likely that the complex will be ready and inaugurated by August 15, said Sehgal.

Emphasising on the gap between demand and supply in the silk industry he said that it tells the prospects of this sector.

“From farming to reeling and selling, there are huge possibilities in this sector.” he added.

Highlighting administration’s efforts Sehgal said the government is working in every field for the betterment of the silk industry by keeping the integrated silk exchange at the centre of activities.

He is of the opinion that Integrated Silk Complex, weavers will get freedom from middlemen.

By getting pure silk thread at a reasonable price, not only will the cost of the product be reduced, but the quality will also improve.

The annual consumption of silk yarn in Varanasi and Mubarakpur alone is around 3,000 metric tonnes. There are about 7,000 handlooms and 800 powerlooms in Varanasi alone.  (KNN Bureau)
