Wool board plans insurance for sheep in the 12th plan

Jodhpur, Sept 3 (KNN) The Central Wool Development Board (CWDB) has plans to insure sheep in order to provide insurance cover to the animals in case of accidents.

“The basic objectives of the scheme is to provide insurance cover to sheep in the case of accident including fire, lightning, storm, tempest, flood, inundation, earthquake, famine and diseases contracted or occurring during the period of insurance policy at any place of the country,” said CWDB in a notification.

CWDB is implementing Sheep Insurance scheme in the 12th plan period (2012-17).

The scheme is proposed to cover about 28 lakh sheep but the actual number may be higher or lower across the country during the 12th plan for a period of one year or 3-years.

According to the scheme, about 80 per cent (a portion) of the premium shall be borne by the CWDB, Ministry of Textiles and the remaining amount of premium will be contributed by the sheep owner itself.

Also, all sheep between the age group of 1 year to 9 years whether male or female shall be eligible for “Sheep Insurance Scheme”.

In order to claim insurance, the breeder will inform about death of sheep to the implementing agency, if any and agency will further take up the matter with insurance agency to complete the documents etc.

Further, the insurance company shall have to settle the claims up to the death of 5 sheep on the basis of panchnama, no post-mortem, no death certificate is required.

In the event of death of sheep, an amount of Rs 3000 per sheep or the sum insured decided by the implementing agency will be paid to the sheep owner.

The woollen industry in the country is small in size and widely scattered. It is basically located in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

As many as 40 per cent, of the woollen units are located in Punjab, 27 per cent in Haryana and 10 per cent in Rajasthan, while the rest of the states, account for the remaining 23 per cent of the units.  A few of the larger units are located in Maharashtra, Punjab, UP, Gujarat and West Bengal.

The wool industry and sheep rearing in the rural sector employs approximately 27 lakh people. (KNN/SD)
