Yarn exports show steady increase

This was revealed by Minister of State for Textiles, Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
Over the last three years there has been a steady increase in production of yarn as also in exports.
According to official data, yarn produced in 2011-12 was 5835 million kgs of which 1542 million kgs was exported (26 per cent) while in 2012-13 it was 6239 million kgs of which 1924 million kgs was exported (31 per cent).
Indian yarn is popular for its high quality in the international markets, according to media reports. However there has been some anxiety in the industry owing to recent developments in Chinese cotton policy, considering the fact that the neighbouring country is a major importer of cotton and cotton yarns from India.
Currently, the price difference between Indian and Chinese cotton is high, with the Indian yarn selling at much lower rates. Prices of Indian cotton yarns after payment of duty and taxes in China are still very much lower than the Chinese domestic yarn prices, media reports said.
However, industry body, Texprocil which facilitates exports from India of raw cotton, cotton yarns and blended yarns, woven and knitted fabrics, home textiles and technical textiles has said that Indian mills need not fear a drop in yarn exports happening beyond the seasonal fluctuations.
