Arunachal Signs MoU With Norway's Tidal Sails For India's First River Kinetic Energy Plant

Itanagar, Jul 15 (KNN) Arunachal Pradesh has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway-based clean energy company Tidal Sails AS to establish India's first river kinetic energy demonstration plant, marking a significant step towards expanding renewable energy solutions.

MoU Signed For 500 kW Demonstration Project

The agreement, signed between the state's Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies and Tidal Sails AS under the India-Norway Green Partnership.

It will facilitate the implementation of a 500 kW demonstration project that generates electricity directly from river currents without requiring major civil infrastructure.

The project is supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Innovation Norway, reported The Hindu.

Arunachal Eyes Sustainable Energy Expansion

State Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and international cooperation in advancing Arunachal Pradesh's clean energy transition.

She noted that the state, with an estimated 58,000 MW hydropower potential, possesses extensive river systems that offer significant opportunities for renewable energy development while ensuring environmentally responsible utilisation of natural resources.

Norway Backs River Kinetic Energy Technology

Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener said Arunachal Pradesh's river network makes it an ideal location to demonstrate river kinetic energy technology, which can complement existing renewable energy sources and strengthen long-term energy security.

She added that the initiative highlights the growing cooperation between Norway and Arunachal Pradesh in areas such as geothermal energy, geotechnical engineering, and sustainable infrastructure.
