35th National Games in Kerala to be hi-tech

Palayam, Jun 14 (KNN) The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs in Kerala is keen to make the 35th national games,  one of the most important sporting events in the country to be held in the state this December high tech and IT savvy.

In this context, the National Games Secretariat has sought bids from the Information and Technology Services Agencies for the selection of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Solution provider to deliver a total ICT solution for meeting the requirements related to the conduct of the 35th National Games.

The premium multi-sport event of India comprises of various sports disciplines in which sports persons from different states and union territories and the services compete against each other. The Games are scheduled to be held once in two years in the state to which the games are allotted.

The 35th National Games is expected to attract over 10,600 participants from all over India, comprising of about 8,000 sportspersons, 1,500 team officials and coaches and 1,100 technical officials.

The conduct of the Games across seven districts of Kerala, spread over a distance of 500 kms, opens up major challenges, in terms of the co-ordination and logistical issues.

Further, the Games provide an opportunity to the host state to showcase its planning and organisational skills, levels of growth in terms of infrastructure and ICT capabilities as well as its creativity, heritage and cultural diversity.

Given the challenges associated with the conduct of National Games and the unique complexities involved in this 35th edition, it becomes imperative; that a reliable and robust ICT system be deployed for ensuring the smart and smooth conduct of the Games, said the notification.

The ICT System to be deployed for the Games shall be cost effective, user friendly and easy to install and operate. It should facilitate efficient functioning of the back end activities of the Games, automate the front-end interaction with participants, officials and other stakeholders; integrate various functional aspects for the conduct of the Games; capture and disseminate event and result information; and help in optimising the resources like workforce, transport fleet, accommodation, food, etc.

The ICT Service Provider will also be responsible for design, development / installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the envisaged ICT Solution for the games.

Components of the envisioned ICT Solution include games management software suite; call centre solution; games web portal and back-end hardware infrastructure.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is the custodian of the National Games and lays down the overall Rules and Regulations for the conduct of the Games. Usually the Games will include about 30 to 35 sports disciplines that are under the control of the approved National Sports Federations (NSFs), affiliated to the IOA. The approved list of disciplines includes a combination of Individual and team sports and each national game will have participation from about 35 States and Union Territories and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB).

35th National Games aims to boost the sports ethos of the people of the State, especially the younger generation. It will cause a churning in the sporting population resulting in the discovery of new talents.

The National Games plans to improve the sports infrastructure in the State and create awareness among the sporting youth that training under modern facilities can create the required talent for competing in national or international events.

The 35th National Games will be a boon for further development of sports in Kerala in the coming years.

Kerala is going to hold the National Games for a second time in November - December 2013. The first occasion was in 1987. (KNN)
