After years of controversy, Odisha receives GI tag for ‘Odisha Rasagola’

Bhubaneswar, July 30 (KNN) After years of controversy, Odisha has finally received geographical indication tag from the Registrar of Geographical Indication (GI) for its popular dessert ‘Rasagola’.

The controversy erupted soon after the West Bengal rasgulla received its GI tag in 2017, which created a huge outcry in Odisha over the ownership of the delicacy.

Odisha that has also been claiming the sweet as its own, has received the GI tag for 'Odisha Rasagola'. The Registrar of Geographical Indications in Chennai has issued a certificate registering the sweetmeat as ''Odisha Rasagola".

Sharing the feeling of content over receiving the GI tag, Odisha Chief Minister tweeted “Happy to share that Odisha Rasagola has received GI Tag in Geographical Indication Registry. This mouthwatering culinary delight made of cottage cheese, loved by Odias across the world, is offered to Lord Jagannath as part of bhog since centuries.”

The GI tag is a name or sign used on products originating in a specific geographical location. The tag refers not only to the location but also the quality, and method used to produce something.
