"Anantapuram is one of the perennially drought-hit districts in the state. The state government has been spending Rs 500 crore to Rs 600 crore annually on input subsidy alone, particularly for groundnut farmers. The ICAR prepared the project to overcome the problem of drought by taking up micro irrigation, horticulture development and employment generation," said a media report quoting state Finance Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy.
The Planning Commission (PC) has assured the state government of the required funds from the Union Agriculture Ministry.
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar had presented the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) report to the Planning Commission for approval in Delhi last week.
Although PC has given the green signal for implementation of the project, it will study the project in detail before submitting its report to the state.
Implementation of project Anantha would be supervised by Director General of National Resources Management Institute A K Singh.
According to Reddy, similar projects will be implemented in other drought prone districts of Mahbubnagar and Adilabad in due course. (KNN)
