Arun Jaitley, Kalraj Mishra to visit Chennai to take steps to revive flood-hit industries

Chennai, Dec 18 (KNN) Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union MSME Minister Kalraj Mishra would be visiting the flood-hit city this weekend in order to take necessary steps to revive the affected units.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu recently visited the city and held discussions with the state chief minister J Jayalalitha over floods, losses incurred and the relief work.

Naidu, after his visit, apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation including the heavy damages caused to the MSME sector.

"He brought to the notice of the PM about the heavy damages suffered by the industrial sector most notably the MSME and Small Scale Industries," a statement from the minister's office said.

Naidu also met Jaitley and Mishra and briefed them about the losses incurred by the industrial sector and especially the MSME sector.

"Both the Ministers have promised to visit Chennai over the coming weekend and take necessary steps for early revival of MSME and SSI industries," it said.

The Ambattur industrial cluster, the largest MSME and SSI cluster in Tamil Nadu, has also suffered huge damage. There has been extensive damage to machineries, raw materials, finished products, installations and also building exteriors.

Naidu suggested the ministers to study the situation and take early steps for survey and settlement of insurance claims for the damages suffered by the industry.

"Other relief measures such as restructuring of loans, extending soft loans with low interest rates etc should also be considered in order to come out of the situation," it said.

Meanwhile, the industry bodies have pegged the loss to the MSMEs in the industrial estates to be around 1,800 crore.

Speaking to KNN, Muthusami C, President of Tamilnadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) told that KNN that six districts of the state - Chennai, Thiruvalluvar, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Tuticorin have suffered the losses.

“The industries incurred a loss of Rs 5000 crore per month since Diwali, that was when therais started,” added the President.

C. Babu, an MSME entrepreneur from Chennai, also spoke to KNN and has urged the government to waive off the loan up to Rs 10 lakh of the flood hit micro units.

“The Government should also declare the Holiday period of six months and repayment of loans should be postponed for coming months, in this no charges of interests and penalties should be put on the industries,” C Babu from Sai Baba Engineering Works Ltd opined. (KNN Bureau)
