Centre suspends toll collection on national highways in Tamil Nadu till Dec-11; issues guidelines for banks

New Delhi, Dec 4 (KNN)  In view of the flood situation caused by the unprecedented rains in Tamil Nadu, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari has ordered suspension of toll collection on all National Highways in the state till December 11, 2015.

The order is to come into force with immediate effect and has been issued to ease the rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations being undertaken by various central and state agencies on war footings and to help the stranded and marooned people in different parts of the state, an official release said. 

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has also issued guidelines to be followed by banks and other financial institutions.

“It is imperative that all steps be taken to extend every possible facilitation to the affected people who are insured persons/nominees and may have been injured/lost their lives/property due to this disaster,” in said in a release.

It is expected that due to floods, bank branches and ATMs might be affected.  The banks are requested to ensure that ATMs are functional and in places where they are not, alternative mechanisms like mobile ATM, ATM vans and mobile ATMs mounted on boats may be used.  The banks may also put their employees’ along with laptops to facilitate withdrawals in localities themselves, it said.

It is also directed that as banks are implementing Agency for Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Suraksha BimaYojna and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan JyotiBimaYojana, the banks are required to appoint a Nodal Officer for each bank as a whole as well as for specific Districts and their telephone numbers be publicized so that the general public is aware as to whom should they contact.  Banks should immediately put in place this mechanism. Banks are requested to indicate daily progress in the format used for disaster relief purposes.

The government has also directed that all Public Sector General Insurance Companies and LIC take immediate action and nominate a senior level officer as nodal officer in the state for coordinating and expediting the settlement of claims that are reported in the State. The contact numbers of the officer need to be communicated to the Department, it said. (KNN Bureau)
