Cottonfab-2021 exhibition to continue in Madurai till 10 Jan 2022

Madurai, 28 Dec (KNN) The ‘Cottonfab-2021’ exhibition and sale is taking place in Madurai’s Gandhi Museum premises till 10th January, 2022.

An array of handloom products are being displayed at the exhibition which remains open from 10:30 am to 9 pm.

It has over 100 artisans across 15 States come together under one exhibition.

Traditional Aari and needlework crochet on cotton and georgette fabrics from Lucknow, Kota-Doria dress materials from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh’s Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees, block print kurtis from Gujarat and Rajasthan, Kalamkari vegetable-dyed sarees, Gadwal, Pochampally and zari border sarees from the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka are on display.

Handicrafts such as Afghani and Patiala salwar, kurtis in tussar, crepe and chiffon, Rajasthani stole, Bagh print from Madhya Pradesh, embroidered stoles from Kashmir, Odisha’s Sambalpuri Ikat and Khandua silk sarees and Bengal’s Dhakai Jamdani were also on display at the exhibition.

Its main objective is to provide direct access to handloom weavers to market their products.

The price of sarees range from INR 300 to INR 3,000 and the price of dress materials range from INR 400 to INR 4,000. Apart from dress materials, a wide range of mats, rugs, quilts and exotic jewellery are also on sale at the exhibition.

Madurai is known for its high quality and durable cotton textiles. Located in Tamil Nadu's textile valley, the city is a major cotton exporter. Madurai has been a textile hub of the state with streets lined with shops selling locally weaved cotton and silk sarees.

It is best known for its chungidi and sungudi textiles. While chungidi is a cotton fabric available in several forms of merchandise like sarees, dress materials and bed sheets, sungudi textile is exclusively used to make sarees.
