New Delhi, May 30 (KNN) Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated India's first commercially approved and South Asia's largest standalone utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Thursday.

The facility, developed by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, is located at the 33 kV Kilokri Substation in New Delhi.

The Minister described the project as a historic milestone for both Delhi and the nation's energy sector, stating that the system establishes a new benchmark in regulatory and technological innovation across India.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with IndiGrid, GEAPP, and TERI.

According to Sood, the facility represents South Asia's largest standalone battery inverter-type power setup, utilising advanced technology. The government aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply for residents through this initiative, he noted.

The 20 MW storage system is expected to reduce strain on Delhi's power infrastructure, with plans for further scaling of the model. The Minister indicated that expansion would focus particularly on unauthorised colonies and areas with limited land availability or existing grid constraints.
