New Delhi, Dec 10 (KNN)  Prior to digging of borewells and tubewells in Delhi, permission has to be sought from the Delhi Jal (water) board and the New Delhi Municipal Corporation.

A notice to this effect was issued by the Office of the Divisional Commissioner, Revenue Department here today.

The move would regulate and prevent the unauthorised and illegal use of underground water in Delhi.

“…no one shall carryout digging of borewells / tubewells without the permission of Delhi Jal Board/NDMC,” it said.

“All drilling machine owners, contractors and their operators are required to be mandatorily registered with the office of the district Deputy Commissioners (Revenue) concerned,” the notice added.

It also said that complaints against such authorised users of ground water like drilling rigs/machines and illegal boring /ground water drawal can be made to the Delhi Jal Board.

Significantly, illegal / unauthorised use/extraction of ground water also attracts penal provisions of Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 which is a fine of Rs one lakh or a term of imprisonment that may be extended to five years or both.  (KNN/ES)
