Kochi, Sept 26 (KNN) At the launch of a campaign to promote spices, Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman said here today that there is a need to develop this ‘discreet and all pervasive’ market within India.

"The Spices Board has said the largest market for spices is growing in India. We need to have our exports no doubt, but within India the market is growing and I think we need to capture and service that market first", she said.

"We need to find good prices for their produce and market within India", she added.

The Indian spice users, who are very nuanced in their taste about spices, have kept the interest in spices growing, she said, adding, "so we need to put our energy together to develop this very discreet but all pervasive market within India", according to a media report.

A market for the surplus of what is produced, after servicing in India, will also have to be found, she said.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy launched the composite promotion for spices which includes mediums of expression like promotional films on spices, a coffee table book on spices and a tagline for branding Indian cuisine-- Indian Cuisine Symphony of Spices.

Spices Board chairman A Jayathilak said the board has been carrying out structured and holistic activities for promotion of Indian spices and to retain its competitiveness in the global scenario.

India's spice exports, during April-May, registered a growth of 10 per cent growth in quantity, 11 per cent in rupee terms and 6 per cent in dollar terms due to increasing demand in overseas markets. (KNN/SD)
