Fireworks traders to appeal in Supreme Court demanding reconsideration of ban verdict

New Delhi, Oct 12 (KNN) With the Supreme Court reinstating the ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR region, saying that the city must try a Diwali without crackers, firework industry and traders have approached the Supreme Court demanding reconsideration.

Talking to KNN, Rajeev Jain, President of Delhi Firecrackers Dealers Association said that with the sudden notification from the Supreme Court, the entire chain of manufacturers as well as traders are to incur huge losses.

Jain said that every year prior to Diwali, the small traders mortgage their property, homes etc and draw loans from the banks to buy stock with an aim to earn profits during Diwali. But with the ban from the Supreme Court, there is much anxiety among the traders as they fear huge debt traps they might end up in.

He further said that the small traders who obtain temporary licenses have their document valid only till Diwali. Therefore even when the Court allows the sale post Diwali, the small traders are organically left out of business.

The Court must have announced a window, permitting the sales this year and a ban from the follow up year, so that the people involved could have had the opportunity to shift their occupations, Jain added.

Jain said that at present, the trading community along with the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises involved in the firecracker business engages a population of not just thousands but lacks, the fate of which is uncertain after the court’s decision. (KNN/ DA)
