Goa CM Unveils Rs 306.3 Cr Plan To Modernise Agriculture & Fisheries
Panaji, Mar 27 (KNN) The Government of Goa has outlined an extensive agricultural development strategy, allocating substantial resources to modernise and diversify the state's agricultural and fisheries sectors.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant presented a comprehensive plan that encompasses institutional support, export promotion, and technological innovation across multiple agricultural domains.
A significant financial provision of Rs 306.3 crore has been earmarked for the agricultural sector, with strategic focus on establishing specialised boards to enhance sector productivity and regulation.
The state plans to create three key institutional bodies: the Goa Cashew Board, Goa Bamboo Board, and a new Goa Poultry Board.
The poultry initiative aims to increase production, regulate the industry, and establish a state-of-the-art poultry farm to improve quality and efficiency.
The Goa State Agriculture Policy 2025 receives a dedicated allocation of Rs 10 crore, developed in collaboration with ICAR-CCARI.
The policy emphasises agro-tourism as a critical component, indicating a nuanced approach to agricultural development that extends beyond traditional production methods.
The Agriculture Produce Export Development Authority is actively working to expand agricultural exports, with notable success in exporting baby corn, mangoes, chillies, and flowers through the Mopa airport.
In the realm of sustainable agriculture, the government allocated Rs 18.7 crore to the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, specifically supporting the adoption of organic fertilisers. This investment signals a commitment to environmentally conscious agricultural practices.
The fisheries sector is set to undergo significant technological and infrastructural improvements.
The proposed initiatives include innovative culture systems for crabs, mussels, and seaweed, utilising advanced box and crate technologies.
A critical security enhancement involves installing transponders on registered fishing vessels, with an estimated project cost of Rs 3.6 crore to improve coastal and deep-sea vessel communication and safety.
A major infrastructure project involving the development of a wholesale fish market, estimated at Rs 41.2 crore, is scheduled for completion by September.
The project will include the distribution of eco-friendly fish kiosks and three-wheeled vehicles to eligible fishermen and local vendors, supporting small-scale maritime entrepreneurs.
These comprehensive strategies demonstrate Goa's holistic approach to agricultural development, focusing on technological innovation, export potential, sustainability, and supporting local agricultural communities.
The multi-pronged initiative positions the state to achieve significant agricultural transformation in the coming years.
