Gujarat Emerges As Key Player In India’s Battery Storage Push

Gandhinagar, Apr 14 (KNN) Gujarat has emerged as one of the top five states in India in the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), reflecting growing momentum in the country’s clean energy transition and grid modernisation efforts.

According to data presented by the Ministry of Power, Gujarat currently has an installed BESS capacity of about 77 MWh, placing it fifth nationally after Bihar, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, reported The Times Of India.

Driven by Energy Security and Renewable Integration

The state’s progress is being driven by increasing concerns around energy security, volatility in conventional fuel markets, and the need to integrate renewable energy into the grid more efficiently.

Industry players note that battery storage is becoming critical as renewable sources such as solar and wind are inherently intermittent, reported The Economic Times.

Strong Pipeline of Upcoming Projects

Despite its current ranking, Gujarat’s future pipeline remains robust. The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved tariffs for 1,665 MW/3,330 MWh of standalone BESS projects under a larger 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh tender floated by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd, marking one of the largest battery storage procurements in the country.

Major industry players are also expanding their presence in the segment. Adani Green Energy is developing large-scale storage capacity, while Ahmedabad-based Rajesh Power Services has secured a 65 MW/130 MWh project, indicating increasing private sector participation.

Favourable Conditions for Expansion

Experts highlight that Gujarat’s strong renewable energy base and large industrial demand make it well-positioned for further expansion in battery storage.

The systems enable storage of excess renewable power, helping manage peak demand, stabilise supply, and reduce dependence on grid fluctuations.

With studies suggesting a requirement of nearly 55 GWh of storage capacity in the coming years and several projects already in the pipeline, Gujarat is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s energy storage ecosystem and supporting round-the-clock clean power availability.
