Cyclone Biparjoy disrupts ginning activity in Gujarat, cotton arrivals down to 8k bales a day

Ahmedabad, June 19 (KNN) Due to the impact of cyclone Biparjoy, the cotton arrivals in the state have decreased to around 8,000 bales per day from around 25,000 bales the previous week.

Ajay Shah, the secretary of GujCot Trade Association said that Gujarat has recorded a bumper cotton crop this year and the arrivals were at 25,000 bales per day before the cyclonic activity.

"During the cyclone, arrivals reduced to 8,000 bales per day because ginning activity was stopped. We believe Gujarat will see at least 93 lakh bales being pressed this year and then too, around 10 lakh bales will be carried forward in the coming season," Shah said.

Jayesh Patel, vice president, Spinners' Association Gujarat (SAG), said, "Most of the spinning mills in Saurashtra and Kutch region stopped production for two days during the cyclone. The Saurashtra region has around 70 spinning mills and most resumed operations on Saturday, but still many are shut because of electricity issues.”

“Cotton yarn prices have come down to Rs 245 per kg (30 comb variety) and most mills are running at around 80 per cent capacity over dip in export orders. However, stability in prices will provide a better business environment to the industry in the coming months,” he said.

Despite the interruptions due to the cyclonic activity, the manufacturers are hopeful that the situation will improve in the coming months.  (KNN Bureau)
