GCCI opposes Gujarat govt’s decision to raise minimum wages by 25%

Ahmedabad, Apr 21 (KNN) The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) in a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has urged the government to reconsider its decision to raise minimum wages.

In the letter, GCCI stated that the hike in minimum wages is “adversely affecting the profitability and growth” of small industries and traders.

The Gujarat government on March 27 had notified the raise in the minimum wages by almost 25 per cent.

“Considering the current condition of the industry, we request you to reconsider your decision and limit the raise to a maximum of 15 per cent. If the decision on minimum wages is implemented, then many small industries will close down and workers will have to be laid off,” GCCI president Pathik Patwari said.

GCCI also stated that the industries are operating at 30 per cent of their capacity and the interest rates of loans have also increased. The body cited the Ukraine-Russia war and stated that the exports have also been adversely affected.  (KNN Bureau)
