Lucknow, May 21 (KNN) Bringing in some good news for the ‘paan lovers’, Uttar Pradesh government has decided to make aromatic rose petal based – gulkand- tax free. The move will ease the load on the pockets of the world famous Banarsai Paan lovers.

UP is one of the major manufacturers of ‘gulkand’. Hailing the decision, the small entrepreneurs, who are into manufacturing gulkand, are of the view that the move will give a major boost to the industry and make their product more competitive in comparison to the neighbouring states.

“The move will definitely benefit the Gulkand industry in the state. The entire small industry, who are into manufacturing Gulkand, were suffering because of the tax as the neighbouring states like Rajasthan did not have any tax on it. This made our product less competitive in the market,” Anurag Jain from Singhai Fragrances, Kannauj, told KNN.

He said that approximately 90 to 95 per cent of the Gulkand manufactured in the state is made in Kannauj. There are more than 100 units in Kannauj employing thousands of workers. Gulkand in Kannauj is prepared from local breed of rose.

'Gulkand', which adds flavour in 'paan', was recently exempted from Value Added Tax (VAT) by the Uttar Pradesh government. It is also considered as an Ayurvedic tonic and has some medicinal values as well.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

In terms of paan production, UP comes at number four position following Bengal, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. In UP, the betel leaf is cultivated in 22 districts.

'Gulkand' is mainly manufactured in small scale industry and provides employment to a large number of people. (KNN Bureau)
