Handicraft village to come up in Sanguem city of Goa

Panaji, Oct 18 (KNN) Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said that the state government is planning to setup a handicraft village in Sanguem city.

Speaking at the Off Farm Sector Producer Organisation (OFPO) for Kunbi handloom weaving, sawant said that the village will be developed under the joint initiative of centre and state. “Center will contribute Rs 10 crore fund and state will put in another Rs 10 crore,” he said.

As per reports, the handicraft village that is estimated to be worth Rs 20 crore, will be set up in 16,000 sqr mtr of land.

“The government of Goa is committed to extending all support or the revival and growth of the Goan weaving art. I appeal to people to be vocal for local to take it global,” he said at the event.

CM also asked his administration to issue General Regulations (GR) for 100 per cent use of Kunbi Shawls at government functions to popularize its use. He also informed that as of now 1000 woman- 500 in North and 500 in South Goa have been trained as part of the initiative.

Sawant assured of easy access to loans with very low interest rate to all those registering as Artisans with the Handicraft department.  (KNN Bureau)
