Bhopal, May 24 (KNN)  The civic body of Jabalpur plans to upgrade street lights in the city with LED lights throwing  an opportunity for manufacturers as the municipal corporation would replace as many 23,000 lights.

Jabalpur Municipal Corporation is planning to convert about 23,000 street lights of Jabalpur city with LED fixtures on BOT (build, operate transfer) basis, an official notice said.

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today's most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies.  Besides being eco-friendly, quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.

Eco-friendly systems of producing energy from municipal waste and biomass have been catching up among some of the state governments and local bodies.  While Punjab has a bio-mass energy project coming up in Chandigarh to encourage use of green energy; Kochi down south will soon get a waste to energy plant, even as other states have taken similar initiatives.

The importance of alternative sources of energy cannot be over emphasised.  Not only are fossil fuels limited, burning of fossil fuel produces harmful greenhouse gases.  It is believed that increase in greenhouse gases is the major cause of global warming.  Further, rapid changes in temperature will have extreme effects on ecosystems and natural processes such as wind patterns.  (KNN/ES)
