Srinagar, May 19 (KNN)  Northern most state of India, Jammu and Kashmir, often referred to as paradise on earth will soon get a passenger ropeway from the tourism park near Verinag Spring to the Botanical Garden in Anantnag.

The capacity of ropeway system is being designed in such a way that it will meet the requirements of tourist inflow both during winter and summer.

The estimated project cost is about Rs 18 crore, official data said.

“The ropeway shall be designed for 400 PPH capacity with two clusters having 4 cabins each. Although the demanding capacity at present is low, it is anticipated that after installation of ropeway in Verinag along with the additional tourism infrastructure, the capacity of 400 PPH shall suffice the future needs as well,” it said.

The proposed system can be run at reduced PPH by way of decreasing the number of cabins in each cluster from 4 to 3 or 2 only during the lean period to avoid unnecessary and tear of the machinery.

Efforts are also being made for a rescue system.  The ropeway system will be provided with three alternatives for its operation:  Electricity through Power Development Department (PDD); Electricity through stand by DG set; and a ringed gear provided on the drive bull wheel driven by a pinion mounted on an electric motor (driven by an independent DG set) is to be provided.  This way, stranded passengers are brought back to stations at a very low speed.

In this context, J&K State Cable Car Corporation has called for bids for construction of ropeway on Built, Own, Operate and Transfer (B.O.O.T) basis, for a concession period of 35 years.

Work on Gulmarg Gondola Project (Phase-I and Phase-II) was taken up for execution by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir through Department of Tourism in the year 1987 and the work for supply, erection, installation and commissioning was awarded to the French Company, namely, M/S Pomagalski of France.  (KNN/ES)
